It's poor reputation is often misunderstood. It follows many of the popular grunge bands of its time: Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and The Pixies. The album is not known for much within its fan base, and is sometimes referred to as their worst album. The band was originally called On a Friday before changing their name to Radiohead for their 1993 debut album, Pablo Honey. I'll show you why, and how it applies to a media product like Radiohead. While not ubiquitous nor an absolute truth, the theory is hearalded as a fundamental guide to storytelling. He postulated that all human stories follow a similar path known as The Hero's Journey. Campbell was an American Mythologist that used stories/mythology/religion to analyze similarites in the human experience. One of the aspects that makes Radiohead's journey so interesting is the band's parellels to Joseph Campbell's "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" (1949). Without experience, what can you execute on? Without execution, what experience will you have? If you can accumulate both experience and execution over time, the greater your product will be. Every musician, film director, writer, painter, and underwater basket weaver becomes better by way of the following equation:Įxperience and Execution are one in the same. In any story, change is relatable, especially if the protagonist is likeable. This journey through Radiohead's discography reveals their change as content creators. Not in the sense of some hipster slugline, but they mean that by listening to Radiohead's journey over time is what keeps the fans coming back for more. Most of the fans I meet tell me how important it is to know the entire discography. At the time, I don't think I could have described what it was, or how I felt about it. Watching Radiohead play live, if you don't know their music, it's absolutely different than any concert you might experience. I wasn't a Radiohead fan at the time I really only knew a few of their older hits, like "High and Dry" and "Creep" (a Rock Band crowd pleaser). I saw Radiohead live amidst the Outside Lands Music Festival last year in San Francisco.
